EMPLOYMENT:

Director, Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore, the R&D consortium of the Regional Bell Operating Companies, then the world’s largest telecommunications software and services company):

  • Software Metrics (2002): Assigned to find out why certain Telcordia systems could not quantify the benefits they generated, as required by customers. Discovered that these requirements were gradually discarded during software development. Proposed appropriate changes to the software development and quality assurance processes.
  • Solutions Planning (2001): Led a team that produced a Wholesale Order Management Solution Prospectus based on a detailed value proposition, contributing to a $50M purchase by BellSouth.

Director, Technology Integration, Viacom Inc. (1997 - 2000). Advised Viacom businesses on new technology opportunities and threats. Contributions included:

  • Advised Paramount Pictures on how to protect intellectual property distributed in digital form. Represented Paramount in international negotiations concerning Content Scramble System, Digital Transmission Copy Protection, and watermarking. Advised on piracy threats such as DeCSS, Napster, Gnutella, and DivX.
  • Demonstrated that video-on-demand on cable would not become a significant competitive threat to Blockbuster Video before 2003. This analysis was presented to potential underwriters when Blockbuster was partially spun off in 1999.
  • Co-authored a business case for Paramount Pictures comparing the potential benefits and risks of electronic movie distribution compared to traditional film-based distribution.
  • Helped create and manage an alliance between Paramount Pictures and Texas Instruments that culminated in the first use of Digital Light Processing technology in a commercial movie theatre (premiere of Star Wars - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace).
  • Numerous strategic analyses of technologies such as recordable DVDs, digital video recorders, video-on-demand, streaming media, xDSL, cable modems, digital compression, advanced cable networks, encryption, watermarking, etc.

Director, Bellcore (1990 - 1996). Twice rated outstanding contributor. Promoted from Member of Technical Staff to Director in 1995.

  • Assigned to increase funding for Bellcore’s applied research division. $21M to $28M was expected for 1996. Investigated client needs and realigned research offerings. $35M of funding was obtained.
  • Formed an alliance with IBM that won a contract to develop an interdomain manager for NYNEX. Formed an alliance with CableData that won a contract to develop a real-time rating/discounting system for BellSouth.
  • Participated in a task force that created a business development plan for Bellcore’s $400M/year consulting business, and sales proposals for Bellcore’s broadband service line.
  • Analyzed the feasibility of offering Video Dial Tone (VDT) service to residential customers. Synthesized contributions from approximately 60 Bellcore experts into a business case covering regulation, market potential, network technologies, economics, and business strategy. Concluded that VDT was technically feasible, but would take 13 to 15 years to break even financially. Clients rated this the best business case Bellcore ever produced.
  • Originated a concept for high-speed wireless residential service at 28 and 41 GHz, and participated in field experiments that established its technical feasibility.
  • Was one of two Bellcore Members of Technical Staff selected in 1994 to attend Carnegie-Mellon University’s Advanced Technology Innovation, an intensive four-month program covering the latest trends in computing, software development, and communications.

Services Manager, Wang France, S.A., Paris, France (1987-1990). Planned and executed the unbundling of Wang’s VSOS operating system, including pricing, grandfathering policies, maintenance and upgrade strategies, regulatory approval, administrative systems, documentation, direct mail campaign, and sales force training. Studied marketing at the Institut Français de Gestion.

Consultant, Scientific-Atlanta, Inc., Atlanta, GA (1984-1986). Helped negotiate functional, technical, and acceptance specifications for the CBS Earth Station Controller (ESC), a computer system that controlled a network of 187 earth stations. This network distributed television programs and advertisements by satellite, replacing CBS’s prior network based on high-speed telephone lines. Participated in system development, with responsibility for change control, contract compliance, and system acceptance. Personally installed, tested, and commissioned the first ESCs in the field. The ESC project was completed on schedule and budget. No warranty claims were ever filed. Also produced RFP responses for network control systems from the Canadian Broadcasting Company, ABC, and others.

Attorney, Boylan, Brown, Code, Fowler, Randall & Wilson, Rochester, NY (1980-1983). Perceived a need to reduce the attorney time required for routine, high-volume caseloads. Conceived and coded expert computer programs that analyzed cases and automatically drafted pleadings, incorporation documents, and wills, enabling the firm to take on additional cases without adding staff or compromising quality.

Systems Engineer, IBM, Data Processing Division, Public Sector, Chicago, IL (1975-1977). Responsible for financially justifying mainframe computer systems in the public sector. Major sales included a library management system for the University of Chicago, a patient admissions system for Cook County Hospital, and a tax collection system for the City of Chicago.
